Folks: it’s mango season here, well, it’ been mango season for a while in other parts of Guinea, but the mangos on the large tree outside our house are ripening day after day. Every day, people pass, take a long look at the burgeoning fruit and make comments. Children stop and cry “They’re ripe! They’re ripe!” and try to jump and touch the ones that aren’t ripe hanging low on the tree in eager anticipation. We aren’t fans of the taste of these mangos but on general, the Forest region doesn’t produce the best mango variety. Moise (Moses), our guardian, has lots of experience in managing people who eagerly desire to climb the fruit trees on the mission compound without asking...fortunately the majority of people ask, then taking an average of 30 mangos at a time! And for every person who asks and gets permission, there are another group of people (most them children) hanging around for their share too!
